This chair was a collaborative creative endeavor between textile artist and upholsterer Hannah Ray and photographer Amanda Herman. Focusing on transformation and drawing inspiration from theater, the two created a theater-style seat with a miniature stage set underneath. The backdrop is a photograph taken by Herman of a forest in Sweden. The disco ball and birds add whimsy and mystery to the scene. Paired with Ray's choice of material, the chair invites the viewer to take a seat and imagine the story within.
Amanda Herman is the founder and editor-in-chief of Live Art Magazine a live, annual art event at the Academy of Music. She's also a teacher and multi-media artist who works directly with communities to create films, photos and public events that address complex social issues. She was a visiting lecturer of Art at Smith College in 2014-15. Most recently, she’s been using art to making dreams come true for an Iraqi refugee and for an artist with disabilities.
Hannah Ray is sole upholsterer and proprietor of Tack Upholstery Studio where she combines an eye for textiles with a love of three dimensional design. With a BFA in textile design and numerous apprenticeships under her tool belt, Hannah has returned to her roots, converting her old childhood barn into a fully operational studio space in Florence, MA. Adding to the quality craftsmanship, tack is one of few upholstery studios offering interior design services.
