Symposium

April 1, Monday 1:00 - 5:30 p.m. / John W. Olver Design Building / Lecture Hall 170
The University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA) is pleased to present Art+ Math = , a symposium in conjunction with a yearlong program of exhibitions about the intersection of art and math, including: Xylor Jane: Counterclockwise; Terry Winters: Facts and Fictions; The Concinnitas Portfolio, curated by Daniel Rockmore; and Pau Atela’s (Re)Creations and MathStudio. This symposium and accompanying concert will be an engaging platform for public discussions that bridge the disciplines of art and math and celebrate the innovative work by those influenced by these fields. The symposium will highlight the connection between art and science while recognizing the gender disparities in the male-dominated art world and STEM fields. The presenters, from a diverse range of disciplines including; quantum physics, education, economics, biology, music, studio arts, and architecture, will discuss their respective work and the connections among them.

The symposium will end with a free, public music performance on April 2 called Art + Math = Music featuring percussionist Ayano Kataoka and electronic artist Jazer Giles at 7:30pm in Bezanson Recital Hall.

The symposium, presented by The University Museum of Contemporary Art (UMCA), is made possible by a grant from the Women for UMass Amherst Fund and is in partnership with Arts Extension Service’s Arts Entrepreneurship Initiative.The concert is presented in collaboration with the UMass Department of Music and Dance.

The Art + Math = program is curated by Bibiana Medkova, MFA Studio Art ’20, and has been made possible by Amanda Herman, UMCA Education Curator, and Loretta Yarlow, Director of the UMCA, in collaboration with the UMass Department of Music and Dance.

2:30 p.m.    Women in Their Fields: Fields: With Taryn Flock (Mathematics), Sarah Braman (gallerist and artist), and Dr. Ajla Aksamija (architect)

3:45 p.m.    What is Beauty? From Line to Finished Composition: With Dr. Pari Riahi (Architecture), Ayano Kataoka (Music), and Dr. Sanjay Raja Arwade (Civil Engineering)

5:00 p.m.    Screening of video about Xylor Jane’s work: With Kate Geis (filmmaker)

Concert (Art + Math = Music)

April 2, Tuesday / 7:30 p.m. / Bezanson Hall / Free and open to all.

11:00 a.m.     Tour of Xylor Jane’s and Terry Winter's exhibitions at UMCA

7:30⎼9:00 p.m.    Art + Math = Music at Bezanson Recital Hall

This evening program will feature compositions by Conlon Narcarrow, Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman, Mark Applebaum, and Jazer Giles.

Keynote address by Dr. Dominic Murcott, composer and Head of Composition and Music Technology at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London, UK

Music curated by Ayano Kataoka and Bibiana Medkova
