Ann Messner portrait

Ann Messner is a New York based artist whose work, since the late 1970s, has focused on the relationship between the individual body and the larger social body as encountered within public space or discourse.

In the 1950s, at the age of 83, W.E.B. Du Bois was classified as an "enemy of the state." Utilizing the recent de-classified FBI files on Du Bois, Ann Messner physically removes the redacted portions of Du Bois' file in an attempt to cancel out its heavily censored content. This installation attempts to remind its audience of what can be lost when voices of resistance are silenced. This photograph is an interactive element of the installation, visitors can take a copy of the FBI files.
