Collecting 101: Acquiring Art for the UMCA

Collecting 101 was offered for the first time in 2021 to allow UMass students from all backgrounds and majors to take part in an exciting and important aspect of museum work: growing the permanent collection. Now in its third year as an annual offering, the course is co-taught by Fine Arts Center Visual Art Director Kristina Durocher and the museum’s Collection Manager Jenny Lind and Associate Director Amanda Herman.

Collecting 101 aims to strengthen the museum’s contemporary collection by adding more works by women and artists of color. The goal of this year’s course is to collect work by Indigenous and Native artists.

Throughout the course, students learn about the criteria used by museums for selecting works for their collections, study artists in depth, and eventually select proposed artwork for the university to purchase. The course concludes as students present their selected artworks in a public gathering, Vote for Art!, where those in attendance vote for the winner.

The winning work is purchased and added to the museum’s permanent collection, and Collecting 101 students are named in the credit line, along with the names of donors who support the program. The UMCA invites undergraduate students to leave a legacy that extends far beyond their time on campus.

Collecting 101 is made possible by generous support from the Lois B. Torf Collecting Fund.
