Unfolding Convention

Jason Wolfe presents a body of bold abstract paintings created by unfolding the conventional form into the unknown. His process takes what has been previously learned, seen, and practiced, and allows it to take on a new identity. The result is enigmatic, challenging to the senses, and a distortion of reality.

For Wolfe, the process of artistic discovery is most fluid when he relinquishes control and dives head-first into the unknown. These are the most exciting moments for the viewer: when he forces himself to work with limited control and rely only on instinct.

Of Unfolding Convention, Wolfe writes, “This body of paintings can’t be categorized as landscapes, portraits, conceptual or clever, nor are they to be confused with content creation. They are active moments of discovery. Recordings, where the button is pressed, and the mic is on.”

Jason Wolfe, born in Queens, New York in 1979, is an artist living and working in western Massachusetts. His interests lie in the exploration of creative mark making as the subject of his paintings. The weaving together of color, texture, and form in his collage-like approach inspires a mysterious sense of wonder and surprise. Wolfe holds his BFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He has been a part of shows at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Gallery Urbane in Marfa, Texas, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, along with shows in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New Haven, Hartford and internationally at Art Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
