Music for Yoruba Proverbs is Bill Cole’s newly released 1986 concert recorded live at Symphony Space. Come, listen to the music, and enjoy Bill Cole interviewed by Glenn Siegel.

Music for Yoruba Proverbs features memorable performances from a rare combination of legends, namely Julius Hemphill, Warren Smith, Abdul Wadud, Joseph Daley, Olu Dara, and Gerald Veasley. With skillful arrangements by the late Julius Hemphill, who handles an unusual instrumentation of saxophones, flute, cello, balophone, Asian double-reed horns, cornet, bass guitar, hand drums and drum kit…this recording is destined to be a classic.

Born in Pittsburgh, Cole received a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. He served as Professor of Music at Amherst College until 1974 and then at Dartmouth College until 1990, where he was Chair of the Music Department. He went on to Chair the Department of African American Studies at Syracuse University.
