"The Dean of Latin Jazz" with the Afro-Cuban Messengers

Chucho Valdés

Tuesday, October 19

Concert Hall   7:30 pm
$35, $30, $15; Five College/GCC/STCC students and youth 17 and under: $10

Hailed as "the Dean of Latin Jazz" and "one of the world's greatest virtuosic pianists" by The New York Times, perennial Grammy Award winner Chucho Valdés has recorded over eighty CDs and performed with countless jazz masters. He appears at the FAC with the fabled Afro-Cuban Messengers. His sister, Mayra Caridad Valdés, will be adding her tremendous vocal chops as the ensemble's singer. This is a show not to be missed!

If you haven't encountered Chucho's fire-eating, classically-tinged technique, check out the "Amazing" video link to your right. (Buried in this incandescently played Cuban son [a rural song form] is C.P.E. Bach's Solfeggietto!) And the video of Chucho's duet with his father Bebo is priceless.

"He can tickle the ivories with the soft grace of Bill Evans and dazzle with the thunderous dexterity of Art Tatum" (All About Jazz ).
