JENINE SHEREOS:
Im/material: Cloth in Collaboration With Nature
February 26 - March 27
Reception; Sunday, February 26, 2 PM - 4 PM
Im/material features a comprehensive collection of both sculptures and photo documentation of installations Shereos has created over the past several years during her residencies and travels across southern France, New England, Cape Cod, and rural Georgia. Using textile techniques such as knitting, weaving, and embroidery, Shereos explores a dialog with the natural world in which threads interact with the landscape or the architecture surrounding it. Sometimes the material is fluid and in motion and other times it is held under tension, creating a network of dimensional lines throughout the physical space it encompasses. There is often an element of surrealism in the work, as curtains seem to stretch and extend out from the windows that frame it, knit cloth is caught up in ocean waves simulating the motion of the seaweed surrounding it, or the vascular structure of leaves is meticulously rendered using individual strands of human hair. In Im/material, work is suspended in a state of making and unmaking as new structures and meanings emerge.
