We’re excited to partner with the Pioneer Valley Symphony for a screening of the classic 1931 sci-fi horror film Frankenstein featuring a live performance of composer Michael Shapiro’s original score.
Though director James Whale’s loose adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, starring Boris Karloff as the Monster, was a smash success on release and has endured as a cultural touchstone, the film was created without a musical score. Shapiro was commissioned to “correct” that omission in 2001, and the film with his score was premiered the following year at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Jacob Burns Film Center.
The Greenfield-based Pioneer Valley Symphony has been presenting orchestral and choral music since 1939, and offers performance and education programs throughout the region. The PVS will launch its 2024-2025 season with this concert.

Put on your best monster gear — or, really, whatever you’ve got going for Halloween — and join us before the the performance in and around the Bromery Center lobby for a cosplay event featuring music, door prizes, games, and seasonal fun. But be warned: last season’s Alice In Wonderland event sold out quickly and brought out some truly amazing costumes. Register early. And when you come out, come dressed to impress.
