Dada Masilo’s Swan Lake
Tuesday, January 26, 7:30 p.m., Fine Arts Center Concert Hall

Combining classical and African dance, Dada Masilo and her company turn the classic Swan Lake on its head. Masilo dances the part of the cursed Odette-turned-swan with fiery spirit.  But in Masilo’s version, Prince Siegfried succumbs to the charms of a male black swan, an attraction that proves fatal. Homophobia, forced marriages, the legacy of apartheid and the ravages of AIDS are evoked with humor, sensitivity and intelligence in a work of astounding beauty.

Swan Lake ticket-holders are invited to a pre-show talk in the FAC lobby at 6:30 p.m., by UMass assistant professor Megan Lewis, a South African-American theatre historian. Audience members may also stay for a post-show talk with the company immediately following the show. Tickets at 545-2511, 800-999-UMAS or online at fineartscenter.com.

There’s also a special Monday night talk: Dada Masilo will discuss her re-visioning of Tchaikovsky's classic ballet. Local dance and LGBTQ community members and patrons are encouraged to attend, open to public. Reception to follow discussion.  January 25, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the UMass Springfield campus, TowerSquare building, 1500 Main Street, Springfield, MA.
