Although Miya Masaoka plays the Japanese koto, an instrument wrapped in more than 1,000 years of tradition, there isn't much that's traditional about her. A veteran of musical encounters with George Lewis, Andrew Cyrille and Pharoah Sanders, Masaoka uses extended techniques to create new musical landscapes. Reggie Workman, bass, has been involved in the music industry for over 40 years. Between 1959 and 1969, he recorded twenty-four albums with jazz greats Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Thelonious Monk, Booker Little, Elvin Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. Gerry Hemmingway, percussion, has played with George Lewis, Anthony Davis, Leo Smith and others in the very fertile New Haven jazz scene in the 1970s, and spent a decade in Anthony Braxton's great mid-80s Quartet with Marilyn Crispell and Mark Dresser.
