Ackerson’s paintings are distinguished by their high vantage points and richly textured  surfaces. From a birds-eye view, he  presents narrative scenes which are an imaginative take on popular culture, modern life and the hidden world of the human psyche. His exciting, agitated brushwork adds to the tension inherent in his unusual depictions. This results in  making his works both active and compelling.

Artist Statement:

Oil paint is my medium of choice. The visual and the narrative go hand in hand in my paintings. I want to offer thrills for the eye and the mind. The colors are rich and multi-layered; the paint is heavily textured. My colors are applied in layers with agitated brush strokes, resulting in an exciting, lush paint surface. I find a square format to be the most satisfying for my images. The birds-eye view allows a variety of angles and perspectives. The human dramas of the paintings are sometimes goofy, sometimes strange, often familiar.
 

Bio:
Bruce Ackerson studied painting and printmaking and earned BA with honors from Allegheny College, he received an MFA in Printmaking from Rutgers University, and studied at the University of Wisconsin before turning to a career in advertising design in New York and San Francisco. After a stint in graphic design, he relocated to New England and now lives and paints full-time in Northampton, MA. He is a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award winner, and has shown in New York, Boston, Provincetown, and the Berkshires. He is in collections worldwide.
