Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World: A talk by Claire Jean Kim, PhD

Thursday, April 22, 2021 4:00 p.m. ET

The Five College Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program welcomes acclaimed scholar and educator Claire Jean Kim, Professor of Political Science and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Kim will speak on her latest book research, a sweeping historical examination of how Asian Americans have been positioned relative to white people and Black people in the U.S. racial order, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. While Asian American Studies scholarship conventionally focuses exclusively on white supremacy, or what whites do to Asian Americans and how they fight back, Kim’s book shows that bringing structural anti-Blackness into the picture as an even more foundational force produces a profound and generative reorientation in our understanding of Asian American history and existence.
