Our spectacular 2023-2024 jazz series continues with a performance by the versatile, inventive, and virtuosic pianist, bandleader, and composer Emmet Cohen.

Cohen is also an educator. As important as his standing as one of the finest jazz musicians of his generation are his deep knowledge of and ties to jazz history and his belief in artists’ obligation to pass knowledge and tradition from one generation to the next. Cohen will wear all of his many hats at UMass. Before leading his trio onto the Bowker Auditorium stage, he'll spend much of the week working with students as this year’s Billy Taylor Jazz Resident.

On stage, look for Cohen and his trio to exhibit not only mastery of their instruments and the jazz form but the blend of playfulness and adventurous spirit that come through on such releases as Future Stride (2021, Mack Avenue Records), and Uptown in Orbit (2022, Mack Avenue Records). You’ll also hear the reverence for jazz history that informs Cohen’s signature professional undertaking, the "Masters Legacy Series," a celebratory set of recordings and interviews honoring legendary jazz musicians. And you’ll experience the energy and pure joy of creative expression that jazz fans across the world came to treasure during the pandemic through "Live From Emmet's Place," a series of performances by the trio and special guests livestreamed from Cohen’s New York apartment.
