Greta Gundersen: The Image and The Imagined

Gundersen’s large scale oil paintings create a visual sense of the threshold between light and matter - the image and the imagined.
 
Artist Statement
When you see something that moves you, what remains in the mind's eye is an emotional afterimage.  Whatever the initial stimulus, be it sky, water, light, earth - I work to create a visual sense of that threshold between light and matter, the image and the imagined. 
 
Using oils on very smooth wood and canvas, details are distilled until the time when the painting hovers between abstraction and representation, when the liminal becomes visible.
 
 
Artist Bio
A native New Yorker of Norwegian descent, Greta Gundersen has been an artist-in-residence at the Millay Colony for the Arts in New York and at Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic.  She has apprenticed with Miguel Arguello in Spain, and Francisco Ruiz in Colombia.  She graduated in Fine Arts and Psychology with Honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
