Magdalen Hsu-Li has carved an identity as an artist in an industry where Asian women are not thought of as musical powerhouses or innovators. An internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, painter, and cultural activist, Magdalen is redefining the female musician and is smashing the ceiling of the American music industry.

The New York Times calls her a "one woman dynamo of talent" and describes her music as "exquisitely furious, beautiful, and exciting". Yolk magazine views her work as "an achingly gorgeous collection of piano based rock recalling the finest moments of Tori Amos or Ben Folds Five". Her cool, edgy, sound and her courage to be sensitive, tender, and feminine distinguishes her from the crowd.

 

This passionate and unique multimedia artist offers rebellion in sexy, soaring, vocals and digs deep to expose the cracks beneath the surface, breaking through the armor within her and in others to connect, uplift, and inspire through her music and art. With her latest CD release,Smashing the Ceiling, Magdalen fluidly catalyzes the rudiments of her life philosophy.

The Stonewall Center hosts a free workshop on True Diversity:Exploring Race, Gender, Sexual Orientation and Programming facilitated by performing artist Magdelan Hsu Li.

 

The Stonewall Center provides support, advocacy, and programming for

lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and allied (LGBTA) students, staff,

and faculty at UMass Amherst. The Center's mission is to educate the campus

community about heterosexism, genderism, and sexual and gender

prejudice in order to create a more inclusive and welcoming climate for

LGBTA people.
