New Abstraction from NYC comes to HAMPDEN GALLERY Moving away from the exuberant gesture of abstract expressionism, championed by the likes of Jackson Pollok and Willem DeKooning and turning toward a subtle and controlled gesture that still retains a sense of awareness and introspection, the artists in LIMINAL present new directions in the evolution of abstraction.

Independent Curator, David Gibson, first exhibited LIMINAL at The Space @ Media Triangle of New York in 2001. In it's début, Gibson included work by Janice Caswell, Laura Lobdell, Erwin Redl and Drew Shiflett. According to Gibson, "The idea for the show is to present a variety of abstract works in which the most subtle visual element is at work, allowing for the viewer to indulge in psychological reflection instead of being overwhelmed by gestural gymnastics."
