Monday, March 4 - Thursday, April 25, 2002
When painter Mary Bernstein and her colleagues launched Mother Tongue in 1991, they imagined it as an opportunity for people to engage in a unique, ongoing, visual arts dialogue. The Mother Tongue dialogue maintains a life of its own — it ceaselessly produces itself. Panels beget new panels. Creative energy flows through its highly organized system. In 2002, the dialogue has grown to global proportions, it now consists of over 400 1' x 4 ' panels — complete with a website and opportunities to participate online. While viewing a selection of the Mother Tongue panels on exhibit in Central Gallery, viewers will have the opportunity to make their own panels and to participate in the ever-evolving exhibition.
