SPIRIT OF INDIA: MASALA ORCHESTRA

Sunday, November 8 at 2 p.m., Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, Chamber Seating

The Spirit of India is a new step towards contemporizing an ancient tradition to give a bold vision to Indian gypsy music and dance today.  Rahis Bharti, the band with a fabulous group of musicians and dancers has travelled the world performing making each prestigious festival, concert hall or theatre into a lavish and courtly stage of his own imagining. On this tour the artists take the audience on a toe-stepping musical journey from the deserts of Rajasthan to the urban city Mumbai to showcase a varied repertoire of gypsy tribal music -mystical, bardic, devotional and Bollywood songs highlighting unique percussive instruments. The dancers in stunning costumes appear as a riot of color presenting the snake dance, the bell dance and more.

Audience members are invited to participate in an Indian Festival in the FAC lobby beginning at 12 p.m.
Just in time for Diwali, (the Indian Festival of Lights) our Indian Festival kicks off at noon in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall lobby. Event sponsor Dean Bean’s serves up samples of Indian tea, and UMass Catering has Indian snacks and mango lassi for sale.

Audience members are invited to witness the creation of a Rangoli, (Indian floor painting), get a henna tattoo and make other Indian crafts. The Belly Dance Club will demonstrate and give a workshop on Bollywood dance moves.
