2015 International Chopin Piano Competition Winner, Seong-Jin Cho
For over a century, the Warsaw Philharmonic has been one of Poland's most distinguished musical institutions. For the orchestra's 4th US national tour, they will be joined by the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition Winner, Seong-Jin Cho. Bachtrack raved, “Cho has an enviable ability to make every note sound distinct and clear, shaping and balancing each phrase perfectly. After only about a minute of his performance I stopped analyzing, closed my eyes and lost myself completely in the sheer musicality of the moment.” The program includes Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, op. 37, Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 73, and Polish Melodies No. 2 by Mieczyslaw Weinberg.

"There’s no doubting the strength and clarity of Cho’s technique, which is combined with a bright, forward piano sound; passages in the outer movements especially glittered fetchingly." – The Guardian
“The orchestra – especially the woodwinds and brass, which mustered a pungent and richly blended timbre – delivered splendidly.” – San Francisco Chronicle
“The Warsaw Philharmonic's concert was sensational, a highlight of the year…one of the best-kept secrets in the business.” – Los Angeles Times
“[The Warsaw Philharmonic] sounded well drilled and brilliant in tone. The orchestra doesn't go in for the behemoth German blend, but instead displays a certain rusticity and vibrancy, each instrument heard separately and brightly. The strings are a cogent unit; the woodwinds pungent but airy. The brasses have a nice zesty zing.” – Orange County Register
Othello in the Seraglio: The Tragedy of Sümbül the Black Eunuch
Friday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m.Bowker Auditorium
Othello in the Seraglio, a uniquely powerful "coffeehouse opera," tells an age-old story of passionate love and murderous jealousy, of a black eunuch at the 17th century Ottoman Court. The stunning score, by Boston composer and Grammy nominee Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, weaves together Italian Baroque and Turkish sources with his own newly-composed music into a tapestry of uncanny beauty. Othello in the Seraglio is performed on European period and traditional Turkish instruments by an ensemble of 12 instrumentalists, singers and a dramatic storyteller.
