The New York Times has called him "the consummate modern drummer." Over his 40-year career, Cyrille has performed with artists ranging from Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet and Mary Lou Williams to Kenny Dorhan, Muhal Richard Abrams, Horace Tapscott, John Carter, Mal Waldron and David Murray. His sterling work has earned him a number of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer. In 1999, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition.
