Linda Griggs: I'm Not Sure I Should Be Telling You This
Thirty Years of Narrative Painting and Story Art
|
OCT 28 - NOV 29, 2012 |
Opening Reception: Sunday October 28 from 2-4PM
As a child visiting museums I always wanted to know the story behind the paintings. As an adult, I make them.
Western, classical narrative art is based on known stories—Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian myths, historical incidents, etc.—and explanatory text is not necessary. My narrative art, however, tells the unknown stories of everyday people making the text essential.
These three series of stories are family histories of racial self loathing, suicide and independence; the contentious, heartbreaking and ridiculous problems that arise when a deceased loved one's remains must be honored; and off hand tales that broaden in scope to depict class, race, death or gender politics.
