Jeff Derose: Triage

November 12 - December 6, 2017
Reception: Sunday, November 12, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

In this multi-media exhibition, Derose  juxtaposes the geometry of 35mm slide film with organic materials and imagery to explore entropic themes.
Artist Statement
Triage is a portfolio of work that examines 35mm slide film and the cultural DNA embedded in the time frame captured during its manufacturing life span, roughly from 1935-2010. The repetitive geometry of film is juxtaposed with organic materials and imagery that explores entropic themes.
Random slides have been gathered from estate sales and the personal family of the artist and cut into with a scalpel. The slides are then sewn into a cotton gauze bandage and incorporated into various combinations with other materials. A red thread is used as a symbolic reference to bloodlines and other cultural mythologies.
The backlit gauze creates a filter that bleeds into the image and also becomes the packing for the wound created by the incision. The stitching is the second element of repair, but also an incremental violation that obscures the original content and the resulting scar forms new juxtapositions for the viewer to consider.
I learned how to process film in a traditional darkroom at a point in time when the negative was held as sacrosanct. To destroy the film was the ultimate act of desecration. A suicide. It is difficult to escape this sentiment. Every incision with the blade feels like a terrible violation, a betrayal, an act of defiance or one of surrender.
Jeff Derose is a multi-media artist working primarily with encaustic, charcoal, photographic media and video. He received his education in Art History and Photography at the University of Maine and was employed for 20 years in the biomedical device industry. Polarity is an underlying theme in his work.
