Solos and Duos
The University of Massachusetts, Amherst has a rich history of support for Black music. Over the last 40 years, the Bright Moments Festival, the Black Musicians Conference, New WORLD Theater and the Augusta Savage Gallery have presented a remarkable array of Black arts. In that time, UMass and the Pioneer Valley has been home-both literally and intellectually-to Billy Taylor, Max Roach, Roland Wiggins, Marion Brown, Sonia Sanchez, Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, and many others.
The Magic Triangle Jazz Series and the Solos & Duos Series stand on those broad shoulders to bring world-class creative musicians to Amherst. Over 27 years, we have had the honor and privilege of presenting some of the leading lights of our music: Andrew Hill, Lester Bowie, Sam Rivers, Milford Graves, Roscoe Mitchell, Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Fred Anderson, William Parker…
We present artists at different stages of their careers, from Yusef Lateef, who was 90 years old at the time of his duo performance with Adam Rudolph in October, 2009, to Tyshawn Sorey, 29, when he performed a solo concert a month after Dr. Lateef. We present improvised music across a broad range of styles and traditions, in an intimate venue at an affordable price.
