Asian Arts & Culture Program
The Asian Arts & Culture Program presents a seasonal roster of events to better the understanding and appreciation of the Asian and Middle Eastern arts, culture and heritage through performances, festivals, inter-generational community events, regional and international cultural education tours, films, talks and interactive presentations by traditional and contemporary artists and scholars of the highest caliber for audiences of all ages. Founded in 1993, this program provides a gateway for learning about Asian arts and culture at the university and in western Massachusetts.
Begun in 1975, this series was one of the two original programs of the Fine Arts Center (along with the University Gallery, now UMCA). Center Series endeavers to offer the finest in world culture through an international performing arts series covering dance, jazz, chamber music, orchestras, popular events, and Broadway.
For more than 20 years, it has been our great honor and pleasure to present many jazz masters, innovators who have had/are having a profound impact on the music. Some of them, like Ed Blackwell, Alvin Batiste, Lester Bowie, Andrew Hill and Clifford Jordan, have left the planet. Mostly they are still very much with us, criss-crossing the world delivering music with a message of love, hope and beauty, and also one of challenge and surprise. The Solos & Duos Series (fall) and the Magic Triangle Jazz Series (spring) presents musicians with something to say: a sound, an approach, a vision, a startling sense of what is possible.
Jazz in July
Jazz in July has always been a summer oasis for the performance and study of jazz improvisation. Every July, musicians from surrounding communities and around the world bear witness to the fact that Jazz in July is a special place where jazz history is created and studied. Because programs run at the same time, high school, college and adult participants are able to join together for combined lectures, master classes, jam sessions and performances.
