Anaïs Maviel – solo vocal performance by emerging Brooklyn-based musician

Anaïs Maviel is a vocalist, percussionist, composer, writer and community facilitator dedicated to expanding the power of music as a healing & transformative act. Her work focuses on the function of music as essential to settling common grounds, addressing Relation, and creating utopian future. Involved at the crossroads of mediums - music, visual art, dance, theater and performance art - she has been an in-demand creative force for artists such as William Parker, Daria Faïn, Shelley Hirsh, César Alvarez, Steffani Jemison - to give a sense of her eclectic company. She performs and teaches extensively in New York, throughout North, South & Central America, and Europe. With a Masters Degree in Aesthetics (Literature, Arts & Contemporary Though - Paris VII Diderot University), she focused her scholarly works on Afrocentric paradigms of Creative Music as utopian alternative politics.

The Wave artist Mixashawn has worked with artists as diverse as Rashid Ali, Bobby McFerrin, Don Pullen, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Ntozake Shange, Quincy Troupe, Reggie Workman, Pheron Aklaf, Ravi Coltrane to name a few.  The term “Wave “ artist refers to an understanding that the universe is composed of an infinite number of “waves” in all atmospheres, yet share certain universal qualities.  A wave artist is one who uses this knowledge to inform and guide their work. Mixashawn has lectured and performed at numerous universities, museums and powwows including Harvard University, Wesleyan University, Trinity College, Museum of the American Indian New York City, American Museum of Natural History NYC, Mashantucket Schmitzen Powwow and the First United Lenape Nations Pow Wow and Standing Ground Symposium, 2018 among many others. He has designed and built Canoe Trimarrans featured in The Hartford Courant, The Cape Cod Times and Soundings Magazine, and has authored a compact guide to Connecticut’s Native people entitled “Indigenous Roots of Social Evolution,” which exemplifies his years of study and practice in identifying and celebrating the Indigenous influence on American Culture, society, arts and science.
