TESS ROCK: FALLEN

January 28 to February 23, 2018
Opening Reception: Sunday, January 28, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A collection of drawings and paintings based on the artist’s contemplation on the notion of falling: to pass suddenly and passively into a state of body or mind or a new state or condition.

Artist Statement:
Walking, gazing down, thoughts inward, I am looking for clarity.

Objects drop, ideas form, allowing for an interpretation of their fallen state.
A fallen state of mind lured me into picking up organic objects for comfort. Finding solace in nature, I was able to move forward. Drawing these findings put me into a state of ease, and allowed me to organize my thoughts. I was able to return to the roots of my art explorations through pencil and paper. These drawings provided a gateway for me to interpret found forms into color on canvas.
When I am most comfortable painting, I find my mind and brush strokes pass into a state where I feel as though I am drawing. The building up and blending of color enables me to create fluid organic forms.  This body of work blends both a semi-literal interpretation of objects with a gestural flow of paint.
