War & Peace

Curated by Lola Baltzell and Trish Crapo

February 23 - March 13

Boston based artist, Lola Baltzell initiated the War & Peace Project in 2008 by making a collage from each page of a 1970s Soviet edition of the novel she’d picked up when she was a Russian studies student in Leningrad. Over time, she enlisted the help of other artists, forming a collective that became known as Team Tolstoy.  Team Tolstoy’s members hail from as close as western Massachusetts to as far away as Berlin and Copenhagen. The War and Peace Project, an exhibition of the first 200 collages premiered in Boston in 2010 and at the invitation of Leo Tolstoy's great-great-grandson Vladimir Tolstoy, the entire exhibit was shown in Russia in 2012. Hampden Gallery will be the first to exhibit the project in its entirety in the United States.
