A Commemoration through Art, Theater, Literature, and Film

In collaboration with the Springfield Vet Center, UMass Student Union Art Gallery, UMass Veteran Services, On the Same Page Northampton, and the Veterans Education Project of Amherst, the UMass Fine Arts Center presents a series of events in November, 2011 to honor and commemorate veterans for serving our country.

The Things They Carried

This masterwork of contemporary literature is a collection of short pieces about the character Tim O’Brien, and his experiences during the Vietnam war. He presents a blurred line between truth and reality, fact and fiction that makes his journey unforgetable.

A panel of artists whose work has been motivated and informed by their military and wartime experience, and/or whose work explores Veterans’s experience in war, and their homecoming.

Panelists:

Matt Mitchell, an artist who is painting portraits of Iraq and Afganistan veterans for his national 100 faces of War Experience project

Doug Anderson, author of the award winning collection of poetry about the Vietnam war, The Moon Reflected Fire and a memoir of service as a medical corpsman with the USMC infantry.

Tyler Boudreau, a former USMC infantry officer, Iraq Veteran, UMass graduate student, and author of a wartime memoir, Packing Inferno, and a novel in progress.
